Orca

Orca Safari
(october - december)

The "formula 1" of scuba diving and safaris…
Each fall the Vestfjord (the waters between Lofoten and the mainland) is invaded by vast amounts of herring. From the end of October to January, this enormous food source attracts the world's largest concentration of Killer Whales. The Whale, with its large jaw, can grow up to nine metres long and weight up to eight tons. The Killer Whales follow the herring, which enter the Vestfjord from the south, passing Kabelvaag…

The "formula 1" of diving - to snorkel together with the Killer Whales, as close as 3 metres away, and watch them perform their sophisticated attacks on the walls of herring! Above sea level, with snow-white mountain peaks as a picturesque background, the seagulls and the ocean eagles fight for the leftovers. The crystal clear water with 20 - 40 metres of visibility makes diving at winter an experience...

The complete Orca base
• Our centre in the small fishing village Kabelvaag is the best starting point for these safaris. The base is an old fisherman’s house from 1890, restored in a real maritime way. Here the participants live comfortable and have all facilities for wash – dry - prepare - repair, accommodation (totally 20 beds) and complete kitchen where you can prepare the "catch of the day".

• For the Orca safaris we use the most beautifully restored 75-foot long cutter M/S Anne Bro. In this “Swan of Lofoten" there are totally 25 beds, a cosy saloon for social gathering, fully equipped kitchen, shower and a large and high steering house - ideal for best view for the whales. Equipped with a compressor 450 l/ min - 200 / 300 bar and voltage outputs for 12, 24 and 220 V. You will find Anne Bro both comfortable and with the right maritime atmosphere. The size and qualities makes her perfect for these Liveaboard safaris.

• On all our excursions we also use our speedy 28 feet RIB, in order to find the whales fast and to make close contact. This boat, with good offshore capabilities, is also very comfortable for our guests. For diving trips from our centre, we use the RIB only.

The unique Orca safari concept
• Lofotdykk is located in the middle of Lofoten / the Killer whale paradise; The strategic starting point when the whales either are in this area, against the west / end of Lofoten, south / outside Bodoe or east / Tysfjord area.

• We are the only operator to have the combination of complete centre, comfortable Liveaboard vessel and offshore RIB. We let the weather condition, distances and clients wishes for type of contact to the whales, decide what “tool” we will use. This makes best flexibility and comfort in northern Norway in the winter! Some time in the future we know that the herring (and then also the whales) will change destination. Our concept is developed for best possible opportunity still to find the Orcas.

• You find the boats only arm lengths away from our centre – all specially designed for these activities!

• We have available more and better equipment for diving, skin diving or snorkling. The air-fills take very short time. Equipment for hire always works properly. All our suits have built in buoyancy for your safety. When you have problems with your own equipment, we always have some “extras”.

• For the best team feeling we have maximum 15 persons in our Orca packages. You are not packed like sardines in huge groups of safari tourists…

• Since 1997 all our clients on Week / Long weekend, have had close contact with the Killer Whales.

• Lofotdykk has the widest knowledge around the good dive sites in this region. We can therefore create the finest snorkling, skin diving and scuba diving activities when the weather is to rough for safaris.
